What does a stolen-vehicle tracker actually do?
A tracker does not stop your car being taken. It is what happens next. The unit is hidden and hardwired into the vehicle, and it reports its position to a monitoring centre — so when a theft is confirmed, there is a live location to give the police rather than a description and a registration.
That distinction matters when you are choosing. If you want the car not to be driven away at all, an immobiliser is the thing that does that. A tracker is about getting it back, and about satisfying an insurer who has asked for tracking on a particular vehicle.

Why is there a monthly subscription?
The hardware is only half of it. The monthly fee pays for the mobile connectivity the unit uses to report in, and for the monitoring centre — people on shift, at three in the morning, who take the alert, verify it with you and coordinate with the police.
That is the part you are actually buying. A cheap unit with no subscription can show you a dot on a map, but when your car is gone at 3am you are the one making phone calls. We are clear about the ongoing cost up front, and it is billed separately by the monitoring provider rather than taken as part of your booking with us.
Will my insurer accept it?
Often the tracking requirement comes from the insurer in the first place, usually on higher-value or higher-risk vehicles, and they will normally specify what they want rather than leaving it open.
Check with your insurer before you book, and tell them exactly what is being fitted — we will give you the details of the unit for that conversation. It is a five-minute phone call that avoids fitting the wrong thing, and we would far rather you made it than find out afterwards.
Can a thief find it or block it?
It is fitted out of sight and wired in, not plugged into the OBD port where anyone who knows where to look can find it in seconds. Where it goes varies by vehicle, deliberately — there is no standard spot to check.
Signal jamming does exist, and no tracker is immune to it. What a monitored system gives you is that a unit which stops reporting is itself an alert: the monitoring centre notices the silence rather than assuming everything is fine. That is another reason a monitored tracker and an unmonitored one are not the same product.

It’s separate from your booking and isn’t taken when you book online.
What does it cost, all in?
£360 to supply and fit the Thatcham-approved S5, then £14.99 a month for monitoring and recovery. No hidden extras — you can book the fitting online and pay on the day.
How long does it take to fit a tracker?
Around 90 minutes for most vehicles. It is booked as a half-day slot so the unit can be sited properly and hidden rather than put somewhere convenient.
Can I see where my car is on my phone?
Yes — the SmarTrack system has an app alongside the monitoring service, so you can check the vehicle yourself. The monitoring centre is the part that matters in an actual theft, but the app is there day to day.
What happens if the car is stolen?
You contact the monitoring centre, they verify the theft with you and then work directly with the police using the live location from the unit. It runs around the clock. Report it to the police as well — they will need a crime reference number.
